She emphasized that no deaths could be attributed to the National Police, since they would not have used their weapons.
The Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, published a video on her social networks to talk about the national strike of October 2019, which was triggered by the announcement of the economic measures proposed by the President of the Republic, Lenín Moreno. She asserted that the Ombudsman’s Office “made up” the names of the deceased in this context.
In the same way, the Minister referred to several of the incidents that occurred during the protests, where 11 deaths and more than 1,000 injured were reported, and she excused herself from any responsibility.
In the first instance, Romo indicated that no deaths could be attributed to the National Police, since their instructions would have been to use only dissuasive force to repel the demonstrations.
“No member of the Police took to the streets with their regulation weapon and authorized material was used to face massive events. None of the human losses can be attributed to the use of weapons of endowment ”.
On the other hand, Romo pointed out that the Ombudsman’s Office invented cases of deaths in the national strike and cited names of people who never existed.
To conclude, Romo indicated that since that day no judicial process was discussed again and, in her opinion, no person was punished for these events, despite the fact that there were dozens of complaints of police abuse, arbitrary arrests, political persecution and excessive use of police force. Not counting on alerts from international organizations about these cases.
