He said he hoped that Ecuador does not take this organization into account to monitor the 2021 elections, this due to the antecedent of what happened in Bolivia.
The former president of Colombia, Ernesto Samper, pointed out that the Organization of American States (OAS) has legitimized frauds such as what happened in Bolivia where that organization ignored the results of the elections, causing the coup against Evo Morales; when months later other international entities and the media from the United States reported that there was never any fraud.
“The general concern with the environment that is surrounding democracy and that is governed by the ideological objectives of these right-wing groups that unfortunately took over the region.”
In that context, he said he hoped that what happened in Bolivia would not be repeated in Ecuador. He said that it would be good if the OAS did not send a mission because instead of representing a guarantee in defense of democracy, now its presence is interpreted as a threatens it.
Exclusively for Pichincha Comunicaciones, Samper indicated that there are very serious observation missions such as the European Union (EU) or the United Nations itself:
“We in the Puebla group do not have a mission as such armed with logistical resources, but we have good willingness to attend ”.
For the former president, the pandemic and the very conditions in which politics is taking place in Latin America are affecting democracy. He also stressed his concern about taking advantage of the pain of the people and the internal confrontations to compromise the electoral scenario
” In Ecuador, Chile and Bolivia, democratic power is being played, such as the change in election dates ”.
