Citizens demand respect to the democracy for the 2021 elections in Ecuador

Ecuadorians demand from the National Electoral Council the participation of their presidential binomial in the 2021 elections.

Several motorized caravans of the Union for Hope (Unes) coalition toured the main cities of Ecuador on Thursday to demand the participation of their presidential duo (Andrés Aráuz-Carlos Rabascall) in the 2021 elections to the National Electoral Council (CNE).

Dozens of cars with followers and insignia of the Democratic Center movement, which is part of Unes, said “let us participate”, “we reject the dictatorship that they want to impose on us”, “why are you afraid of the citizen’s revolution” and others.

“This is an action so that democracy is not cheated,” said the former assemblyman and leader of the Citizen Revolution movement, Virgilio Hernández, who pointed out the purpose of this civic act so that the people democratically decide their destiny and distinguish in Andrés Aráuz an option of Government of national unity.

On September 22, Unes entered the CNE, via the internet, the documentation required to register its electoral binomial, which included former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) as a candidate for vice presidency.

According to Aráuz, it is a political move intended for the CNE to disqualify Correa’s candidacy, which will lead to his replacement by journalist Carlos Rabascall as his running mate.

Correa is politically disqualified after receiving a sentence of 8 years in prison, by the Ecuadorian courts, for the alleged crime of bribery in the so-called Bribery case 2012-2016.
