The electoral roll is made up of 13’099.165 voters.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) will call this Thursday, September 17, the general elections of February 7, 2021.
A total of 13’099.165 citizens are empowered to elect a presidential binomial, 137 legislators and five members of the Andean parliament. With this, the CNE will become the highest authority in the electoral period.
The start of the registration of candidacies will begin this Friday, September 18 and will run until October 7.
There are several pending aspects. Among them, the analysis of the legal life of four organizations in the process of cancellation, the pending budget for the elections and the implementation of biosecurity measures,
The electoral analyst, Andrés León, expressed concern that elections will be called “and not everything is ready.”
He considered that there are several gaps and insecurities in the organization, which generates mistrust.
Days ago, the president of the electoral body, Diana Atamaint, said that in budget matters the technical table formed with the Ministry of Finance is evaluating the possibility that some costs of the more than USD 114 million are absorbed by other state entities.
Meanwhile, the Glbti collectives denounced that the electoral roll had not divided voters according to their sex, but rather by their gender. The CNE acknowledged the error and announced that it was fixed.
Regarding the registrations of candidates in general, the CNE explained that the cadres may exercise their nomination in two ways: via the Internet or in person. For this, it is not necessary for them to go to the headquarters of the entity, but rather the legal representative of each group can do so.
There will be a long challenge stage, so the final list of applicants will be released on January 7, 2021.
For the presidential elections there are 16 organizations that accepted their candidacies. However, three of them are in danger of not being authorized, since Social Justice, Podemos and Libertad es Pueblo are under review. Fuerza Compromiso Social (FCS) is also part of that group, but before it achieved an alliance with Centro Democrático.
In relation to this issue, Atamaint mentioned that this Thursday there will be a pronouncement.
Once the registration period ends, on October 7, another stage will begin, that of the challenges to the candidates. These must be processed by the members of the Electoral Contentious Tribunal. This phase can be extended until January 7.
Sunday, February 7, will be the first electoral round and, if necessary, a second round is scheduled for April 11.
