Peruvian Congress approves petition to remove President Martín Vizcarra

According to the President, there is a plot in some sectors of the legislative power that seek to remove him and perpetuate himself in power.

The congress of Peru approved a request for dismissal for “moral incapacity” and ties in corruption cases against the president of the republic, Martín Vizcarra.

This request must reach 87 votes in favor of the 130 congressmen, so that the dismissal becomes effective and it is Manuel Merino, president of the Peruvian congress, who assumes the Presidency of the Republic.

Vizcarra denounced that there is an alleged plot by some sectors of the legislative power that, according to him, want to remove him to perpetuate themselves in power. On the other hand, Merino has already addressed the Armed Forces of the country and informed them that he will act “in strict compliance with the constitutional order.”

The latest conflict between the president and congress came after the president asked legislators to pass a law, which prohibits sentenced people from running for public office.

The current president of Peru has led the country without a legislative bench, since he came to power in 2018. In 2019 he dissolved the previous congress and called for new elections, while the new congressmen, already in office, forced the prime minister of State, Pedro Cateriano, who had only been in office for 21 days.
