Protests in Ecuador for lack of payment to workers

Several sectors complain about the lack of payment by the Government since the beginning of the pandemic in the country.

The Office of the Ombudsman of Ecuador was at the hearing of protection action on Tuesday to demand that the State pay salaries to public servants, which was supported by protests in various parts of the country.

According to the entity, in various areas of the country workers held sit-ins to demand their rights.

In addition to the Ecuadorian capital, there were demonstrations in downtown Guayaquil, Santa Elena, Morona Santiago, and Orellana. With the slogan of “My salary, my right” teachers, health workers and other sectors met to support the demand.

The Office of the Ombudsman of Ecuador presented on August 17 an action to demand from the Government immediate payment and the fourteenth remuneration in the Sierra and Amazon regions. It was scheduled to be canceled until August 15.

In a statement, the Ombudsman’s Office pointed out that the rights of public servants to receive fair and equitable remuneration, equality and non-discrimination, among others, are violated.

In addition, she asked that reparation measures be taken and that the payment of salaries to public employees be made immediately.

“The constant delays in salary payments has impacted on the fulfillment of their obligations to other people and entities. It has even generated that many people who provide their services in public entities appear to be unable to hold public office,” said the entity state, in charge of ensuring human rights in Ecuador.
