Cuba begins human clinical trials of its vaccine against Covid-19

Around 600 people volunteered to start Soberana 01 clinical trials.

Cuba begins the first phase of clinical trials of a potential vaccine against covid19, it is called Soberana 01 and will be developed by the Finlay Vaccine Institute.

Cuba ranks 30th among the 200 countries that are developing a coronavirus vaccine, but only those 30 achieved approval to start clinical trials.

Dr. Vicente Vérez, director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute, commented that:

“The Cuban vaccine candidate, Soberana, is the first in Latin America and the first in a country poor in economic resources, but great in spirit.”

This potential vaccine is the product of years of experience in preventive medicine and also the development of its biopharmaceutical industry. At least 600 people between the ages of 18 and 80 volunteered for clinical trials.

Every year in Cuba 11 types of vaccines are given, 8 are locally produced, which protect against 13 diseases. Coverage rates exceed 98%, which is why the population has a high immune level.

In this way, Cuba joins countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia, China and the United States in the race to find a vaccine against covid19.
