Survey reveals the most unsafe place for women is their own home

The confinement generates physical, psychological and sexual violence.

A survey of 2000 women from Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Pichincha, Santo Domingo, Napo, Pastaza and Azuay conducted by the Center for the Action and Promotion of Women (CEPAM) and the Consultant Pulso, revealed that 67% consider their home as the most unsafe place and they fear for their integrity.

Lilia Rodríguez, president of CEPAM, affirmed that the confinement increased the risk of violence (physical, psychological and sexual), generating a perception of total control and impunity in the aggressors.

For example, 28 out of 100 respondents said they were experiencing physical violence during confinement by their partners. 85% affirmed that the economic situation and unemployment are degrading family relationships, this has become one of the main causes for mistreatment against them.

The sample adds that due to the application of layoffs and lower wages in public and private companies there are figures on the impoverishment of women.

It points out that if before the pandemic 3 out of 10 women earned the basic salary, today 5 out of 10 earn less than the basic one.

Another alarming fact is the one referring to sexual violence. According to Alexandra Clavijo, from the consulting firm Pulso Ciudadano, one in 10 women has suffered or been a victim of rape during the pandemic.

“They have suffered harassment 69.17% through social networks,” she said.

CEPAM warned that this is a silent pandemic that requires urgent attention from the authorities because in many cases it takes the lives of wives and mothers.

Bibiana Aido, representative of UN Women in Ecuador, was concerned about this situation.

“We have developed very great efforts to counteract the effects of Covid-19, we have a very important road to travel and we must also focus on eradicating the historic pandemic that is violence against women and girls,” she said.
