A team of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is due to visit Ecuador from October 20 to November 8 to look into allegations of human rights violations and abuses committed in the country in the context of the recent protests against the economic measures announced by President Lenin Moreno.
They explained that the mission will be conducted at the invitation of the Ecuadorian Government. During their visit, UN investigators would seek to meet with government officials, Indigenous leaders, representatives of civil society, journalists and other stakeholders to gather first-hand information on the circumstances of the violence that spread across the country from October 3.
They said that their Office has received allegations of human rights violations committed by state security forces, as well as reports of crimes committed by third parties.
“We are also concerned about reports of arrests in Ecuador -including political actors and elected officials- in relation to recent protests in the country. We call on authorities to ensure the full respect of due process guarantees and relevant immunities.”
The announcement came after President Moreno and Indigenous leaders reached an agreement Sunday to end 11 days of violent protests against austerity measures adopted to obtain a loan from the International Monetary Fund.
