Oxygen tank prices vary among those who sell them

The Arcsa pointed out that those affected can file their complaints at the Arcsa offices and also through the application called ‘Arcsa Móvil’.

Since the onset of the health emergency due to the coronavirus, oxygen tanks are required by some patients to overcome the disease. But before the need of the people, it would be speculating with the values to pay.

Relatives of patients with coronavirus who wish to purchase or rent oxygen tanks warn of price increases and constant changes in the amounts they must pay.

For example, Katherine Moreno has her father sick and needs oxygen for his recovery.

“I have asked in many places where they offer this service, in one place they tell me more expensive in another cheaper one and that is why I chose the most convenient one,” said Moreno, who must pay USD 50 a day to refill the tank.

To this item is added the cylinder rent, for which it pays USD 30 every 15 days.

“They told me that there is a shortage of oxygen and cylinders for rent, because there are many people who currently need it,” he said.

Esteban Aguilar, on the other hand, pointed out that he must spend USD 60 a day to recharge the cylinder. To this item must increase the one corresponding to the valve that distributes and regulates the supply of the product, for which it canceled USD 250.

“As we have never used, we do not know if what they charge us is correct, but if it is true that none of them have the same prices, one is more expensive and the other cheaper,” he said.

In Ambato, one of the companies that provides this service, rents the oxygen tank at USD 40 every 15 days, while recharging costs USD 50. But if the user needs to rent the tank with its respective valve, it is necessary to leave a guarantee in check for the value of USD 600.

Tatiana Guevara, zonal coordinator 3 of the National Agency for Regulation, Control and Sanitary Surveillance (Arcsa), assured that the direct sale of oxygen from the distributor to the user is not allowed.

She argued that the cases exposed have not been identified in the controls carried out by Arcsa, this because they are direct sales and without invoices, the same ones that prevent verification of non-compliance. An oxygen tank can cost around USD 450 plus VAT.

The official indicated that citizens who feel disadvantaged can report these types of cases in the Arcsa offices and also through the application called ‘Arcsa Móvil’.
