Assemblymen defends its use, when scientists have alerted its risk to people’s lives
The Minister of Health, Juan Carlos Zevallos, affirmed that chlorine dioxide is an element used for disinfection processes and that it is not proven as a benefit for humans.
“It represents risks to the health of citizens,” he said.
The health authority mentioned that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local scientific societies have referred to chlorine dioxide, “even though they do not have scientific endorsement and sanitary authorization to support its safety and quality.”
His statement comes after the Assembly Audit Commission received several representatives of the World Health and Life Coalition (COMUSAV), who encourage its application in patients with COVID-19.
But the scientific community warns that there is no evidence for its application and that, on the contrary, it could be harmful to health.
Edgar Samaniego, medical pharmacologist, member of the Observatory for the Pichincha coronavirus, said that the debate on the use of Chlorine Dioxide to combat Covid-19 is not scientific, but that the controversy is between science and the market.
The member of the Ecuadorian Academy of Medicine, Hugo Romo, clarified that products cannot be supplied without scientific endorsement, since the person’s life can be at great risk.
“Those who prescribe it do not have the prolixity to indicate to patients about the possible impact, so we are against experimenting with citizenship,” he explained.
