The joint declaration states that the pandemic has exposed the historical absence of the states in the Amazon territories.
Last Thursday, June 4, the UN Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) alerted that SARS-CoV-2 threatens to destroy the ancient ways of life of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon.
“We warn that the Covid-19 has seriously endangered the survival and rights of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin, bearers of a deep knowledge of one of the richest ecosystems in biodiversity and cultures on the planet,” urged a joint declaration.
The IACHR expressed its concern about the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the Amazonian towns of Ecuador and recalled the need to take extreme measures that guarantee their right to health for the inhabitants.
“The State is alerted to the special vulnerability of Indigenous peoples and reminds of the need to take extreme measures that guarantee their right to health from intercultural, gender and intergenerational solidarity approaches,” said the Commission.
In Ecuador, there are 14 Amazonian indigenous people killed with coronavirus, while there are 240 people infected with the virus, according to a report by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE).
