Ecuadorian government threatens criminal trials against the Ombudsman’s Office

Representatives of the Government Ministry and the Foreign Ministry threaten criminal trials against the Ombudsman’s Office and witnesses.

 This Friday, May 15, 2020, representatives of the Ministry of Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs threatened criminal authorities against the authorities of the Ombudsman during a trial, the institution denounced this Friday.

“Representatives of the Ministry of Government and the Foreign Ministry threaten criminal trials against the Ombudsman’s Office and witnesses during a protective action trial in the Transit Judicial Unit in Quito, to guarantee the rights of Ecuadorians abroad”, the Ombudsman wrote in a tweet.

The Ombudsman Freddy Carrión described the situation as intolerable: «Intolerable that the public officials in charge of guaranteeing the rights, intimidate or threaten whoever is justly protecting the violated rights» reads on his personal twitter account.

Furthermore, they denounced the harassment and criminalization of human rights defenders and ask for the attention of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

On April 20, the Ombudsman’s Office filed a protective action against the Ecuadorian government for the inefficient public policy for the return of stranded citizens abroad and that violates their right to return to the country. (C.D.A.)
