The authorities ask not to take these measures.
Some citizens, who have lost their jobs during this pandemic, do not have money to pay their rent and the owners of the properties have asked them to leave.
That is the case of Érika Osorio, a Venezuelan citizen who lives in La Garzota, Guayaquil, with three minor children, and who already owed three months of rent.
Osorio worked as a fuel dispatcher in the Yaguachi canton, but she was fired because she had no transportation to get to work. Therefore, she does not have money to pay the rent and the owner of the house gave her until 16 May to vacate.
Property owners prefer not to be paid, but rather to be evicted, said Osorio, who is looking for a shelter or someone to lend him money for another rental.
The authorities have requested that evictions for non-payment not proceed. In Guayaquil, the Cantonal Board for the Integral Protection of Rights issued protection measures that will be in force only in a health emergency.
Vicente Torres, the entity’s executive secretary, points out that the Ombudsman’s Office intervened in cases of imminent expulsion of families that had minor members.
Mirelli Icaza, coordinator of Zone 8 of the Ombudsman’s Office, explained that in the case of Guayaquil they have received at least 40 reports from tenants asking for help due to the pressure of the homeowners and that they have had to mediate so that they arrive to agreements.
