Police Commander alerts of “significant increase” in homicides of minors

The Commander General of the Police, Patricio Carrillo, reported that only today, two children lost their lives. Carrillo expressed his concern about the “significant increase” in the homicides of children and adolescents, since the confinement by COVID-19 began.

He said that in the first two months and 15 days of the year, 277 intentional homicides were registered, while, from March 15 to date, there are 109, which represents a reduction, but there are alarming data in vulnerable groups.

In this period of isolation, homicides of children between 0 and 11 years of age increased by 2%; it increased 6% in adolescents between 12 and 17 years old; 35% in young people between 18 and 29 years old. While a reduction in adult homicides is observed by 52% and 5% in older adults.

He explained that this may be due to the tensions that may exist within their homes, the increase in deceased minors.

In addition, there are 21 cases of sexual abuse of minors that, he said, end in voluntary disappearances by the victims. “We believe they have a high impact on infants” confinement.

Another fact that catches your attention is that, of the 109 homicides, almost 40% happen in private spaces and 26% in rural areas.

With regard to crime, he showed a table that reflects a considerable reduction, but clarified that the Police collect this information through the complaint and “now we are only working in the prosecution with flagrante delicto and the complaints are somewhat limited.”
