The Civil Registry published the reported death figures in the 24 provinces of the country. In these data, an abrupt increase can be observed in the deaths recorded in the provinces of Guayas and Santa Elena, since in comparison to the months of January and February (prior to the coronavirus) an increase of around 300% is evident.
In the province of Guayas, 1,943 deaths were reported in January; 1,679 in February; 4,236 in March and 7,423 until April 21, which was the last cut in the Civil Registry.
Similarly, in Santa Elena there were 116 deaths in January; 112 in February; 133 in March and 353 until April 21.
Across the country, there was also a sharp increase in deaths in recent months. In January the total number of deaths was 6649, in February 5962; in March 7 726 and until April 21, 10 171, which shows an increase of almost 35% of deaths compared to the first month of the year.
On the other hand, if the previous years are taken as a reference, an increase of approximately 40% is noted in reference to the years 2018 and 2019.
