Chronic disease patients concerned about drug shortages

Hydroxychloroquine is a medicine used for diseases such as lupus and used in the treatment against the coronavirus.

The lack of medicines for patients who do not have coronavirus worries those who suffer from chronic diseases.

Yessenia Cuello and her son are desperate, they don’t want to die. Both suffer from lupus, a chronic disease caused when the immune system attacks their own tissues.

Both have 20 days without taking hydroxychloroquine because in the province of Esmeraldas, where they reside, they cannot find the medicine in any pharmacy.

Cuello comments that there are people who sell the box of 20 units for $ 240 when that same content was worth $ 17, leaving $ 223 as profit.

Gabriel Orihuela, president of the Ecuador Patients Foundation, which commits those suffering from three chronic diseases in the country, is concerned about the shortage and speculation of these pills that are being experimented for the treatment of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Police investigates three cases ex officio not only in the medicine distributors, but also in social networks.

They recommend exposing this type of situation to ECU 911. Over the weekend, one person was detained in Guayaquil and no further arrests are ruled out.
