The bonus is USD 60 per month and is planned for just 950 thousand people.
For 4’691,224 Ecuadorians who are part of underemployment, the measure of staying home is difficult for them when they need to go outside to get the minimum resources to survive.
Although the government offers an emergency bonus of USD 60 per month to be delivered in April and May, to help the informal, it will only benefit 950 thousand people.
According to the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES), the first list consists of 400,000 people. That number barely represents 8.25% of the country’s informal workers, who, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), earn, on average, USD 145.62 a month. In addition, 66% are 44 years of age or younger and have a family of at least three members.
Roberto Oña, a street vendor, commented that “if he doesn’t work he doesn’t eat”; and that simply complying with the restrictions means not having to pay the rent or to eat something at least once a day.
Alberto Acosta Burneo, economic analyst, pointed out that it is very complex to demand compliance with the restrictions of more than 60% of the Economically Active Population (EAP) if we do not offer them real and effective subsistence mechanisms.
Alba Jalón, Vice Minister of Inclusion, acknowledged that they are aware that aid does not reach all those who need it, so they are “looking for additional sources of financing to deliver more bonds.”
