Food and service prices rose in March

INEC reported that inflation stood at 0.20%; while in February it was -0.15%. Quito and Guayaquil are the cities with the most expensive Basic Baskets.

 Inflation for March 2020 was 0.20%; while the annual reached 0.18%. This was announced by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) in its monthly report.

The categories of food and non-alcoholic beverages, miscellaneous goods and services, health, furniture and household items, basic services and education rose in price during March, when in February inflation was negative, reaching -0.15%.

Only in the item of food and non-alcoholic beverages the Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 0.1813%, a higher level in reference to March 2019 that was -0.0768%.

The health category, due to the health emergency presented a variation, was located at 0.0116%; while in the same period of the previous year it was 0.0009%.

On the contrary, transportation, recreation and culture, restaurants and hotels, communications and alcoholic beverages had negative variations. The lowest were the last two.

Meanwhile, the Basic Basket (consisting of 75 products) reached USD 713.89 and the Vital Basket (with 73 products) reached USD 503.26.

In March, in the cities of Loja, Cuenca, Manta, Quito and Guayaquil the Basic Basket cost more; while in Ambato, Santo Domingo and Machala it was cheaper.

In the case of the Canasta Vital, the most expensive or expensive were in Manta, Machala and Guayaquil and the cheapest Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo and Ambato.

This scenario is recorded, once the spread of the coronavirus in the country accelerated in March and measures such as the curfew were established.
