Indigenous people ask to be considered a vulnerable group against the coronavirus

Sixteen social organizations signed what they called urgent action.

Social organizations, among them indigenous, asked the Government to be considered a vulnerable group in the face of the coronavirus and proposed that their leaders be part of the technical panels to attend to the emergency.

In a statement, they indicated that they have economic, social, health, and production needs that must be met. At the same time, they questioned intentions to militarize areas of the country to comply with home isolation.

They specified that the Government must take “all necessary, culturally appropriate and effective measures to protect the communities and territories on which they depend.”

They stated that the health emergency came on par with other problems faced by peoples and nationalities such as the flooding of the rivers of the Bobonoza basin, in the communities of the Sarayaku Parish, Pastaza Province.

Likewise, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) questioned the mining activities that take place in the national territory.
