Catalan jails implement video calls for prisoners to communicate with their families

The Generalitat will initiate a pilot plan to allow prisoners to contact with their relatives electronically.

The restrictions imposed by the coronavirus crisis also affect those who are deprived of liberty, as they have been unable to receive visits from family members for several days and in some cases, have stopped enjoying exit permits.

These limitations have led to an increase in tension in prisons that has led to conflicts, such as protests by 60 prisoners at the Brians 1 prison.

To alleviate the pressure, the Generalitat has launched a plan that will allow prisoners to contact their families by video call; therefore, 230 mobile phones will be urgently distributed in the penitentiary centers.

As reported by the Department of Justice in a statement, this Tuesday, March 24, this project will begin with a pilot test in the Quatre Camins prison.

Inmates will be able to call their relatives from the computers of the educational facilities of the prisons and communicate with them through a free program -jitsi meet-, which can be installed on all types of computer equipment, tablets or mobiles.
