Argentinian legislators assess actions in face of police violence

The bloc of legislators Frente de Todos (Front of All-FdT) on Monday is assessing legislative, political, and legal actions in view of the violence exercised by the capital’s police during a demonstration in support of Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández.

In a communiqué, the members of the Lower Chamber of Congress denounced the repression against citizens and leaders such as Cristina Fernandez’s son, Máximo Kirchner, who is a member of that body.

We stand in solidarity with all the comrades who were victims of violence yesterday. We demand that the city government identify the police officers involved in the repression against Kirchner, the text states.

On Saturday, several mobilizations took place in different regions of Argentina to support the former head of State, and thousands of people arrived in the vicinity of her apartment in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires to condemn the installation of fences, as well as the police deployment in the area.

The police officers repressed those present with tear gas, hydrant trucks, and batons, a journalist covering the events was hit hard on the head, and several people were arrested, among them two legislators.

After what happened, the FdT senators condemned “the cowardly harassment, the attempt of Fernandez’s symbolic confinement and the repression.”
