Chilean President Gabriel Boric on Friday assured his government will guarantee people the right to own and dignified housing, and also expressed his uneasiness for fake news regarding a new constitution proposal in this regard.
President Boric opened on Friday the new compound Los Olivos, in the commune of Vallenar, in Atacama region, which will benefit 160 families.
When the housing policy manages to integrate culture, sports, recreation with the own house, the quality of life will be improved, said the Chilean president.
Boric refuted all versions according to which the draft of the Magna Carta does not guarantee this right.
“It bothers me deeply as they lie, as they misrepresent, as there are public opinion figures who say the draft of the new Constitution negates home ownership; that is a lie, false”, Boric pointed out.
Article 51 of the proposed fundamental law states the State will take the necessary steps to guarantee the universal and timely enjoyment of this right.
It also specifies that housing must be decent and adequate, and allow the free development of a personal, family and community life.
The State shall give priority in the design of its policies to low-income people or those who belong to special protection groups.
According to the President, the right to housing will be guaranteed regardless of the result of the referendum and he assured the Government’s plan is to build as many as 260,000 houses, an ambitious objective that will be reached with public-private collaboration.
