Drought affects a quarter of Mexico’s territory

The drought is dramatic in many states of Mexico, especially Nuevo Leon, and affects a quarter of the national territory, the National Water Commission (Conagua) said.

The institution reported that it is in conditions of severe to exceptional drought, and the holders of national water concessions, especially for industrial and agricultural uses, will have to provisionally provide third parties with the liquid they have been granted.

Conagua specified that the concessionaires must also establish preventive and drought mitigation measures, as provided for in the Program of the Basin Council that corresponds to them, as indicated in the general agreement on the commencement of an emergency due to severe, extreme or exceptional drought.

In addition to that territory in those degrees of drought, he adds, there is another 41.76% in conditions of abnormally dry to moderate drought, in which the agreement does not apply.

The agreement indicates that in the case of industrial and agricultural uses, the water authority will verify that the volumes that are temporarily transferred or ceded are delivered directly to the distribution network in coordination with the operating agency, as long as the emergency persists.
