Four days after the beginning of clashes between gangs in the capital of Haiti, some 12 civilians and 40 presumed gang members have been killed, Le Nouvelliste daily reported on Tuesday.
A total of 52 people have been killed and 110 have been injured, interim mayor of the Cité Soleil, Joël Janéus, told the daily and lamented that most of the injured are residents who flee the clashes.
He deplored that some of the people killed are young people who had nothing to do with these armed gangs and criticized those who supply weapons to the gangs.
The new escalation of violence occurs amid clashes between the G9 federation and allies against G-Pep in the northern area of Port-au-Prince.
Coordinator of the National Human Rights Defense Network, Pierre Espérance, denounced that insecurity is the result of the work of the State and accused the authorities of supplying ammunition and firearms to armed gangs, especially to the G-9 and allies.
On Friday, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) lamented that the umpteenth clashes sow terror in the areas of Bas Delmas, Croix-des-Missions, Santo, Tabarre, and the Cité Soleil commune.
