Migration, its consequences and possible solutions will be the main topic for Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who arrived today in Washington to meet with his U.S. counterpart, Joseph Biden, according to an editorial in the newspaper La Jornada.
La Jornada recalls that Lopez Obrador will insist on the implementation of economic and social development programs in the regions of Mexico and the rest of Central America where large groups of migrants originate.
He will also advocate for the recognition of the need of foreign labor in the U.S. economy as a previous step to an immigration regulation plan that grants travelers rights and security to work legally.
The media points out that “the adoption of such a measure is of obvious necessity, common sense and decency”, but the Biden administration has not had a clear policy on the matter, due to the differences between political sectors in the United States and xenophobic practices.
These differences and practices, the text points out, “block any possibility of building a dignified and secure migratory framework”.
Other issues to be discussed at the meeting will be bilateral economic relations, arms trafficking from the United States to Mexico, the fight against drug trafficking, and the announced request to the White House to put an end to the judicial harassment of journalist and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
