China urges US to revoke sanctions againt Cuban officials

China urged the United States on Monday to revoke the unilateral sanctions imposed on 28 Cuban officials and called that action a typical example of coercive democracy.

Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference that those measures are unfounded and ratified Beijing’s support for the efforts of the Cuban government and people to keep social stability.

He also recalled the majority support at UN General Assembly for 29 consecutive years for the resolutions presented by Havana to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade enforced by Washington for more than six decades.

He call on the United States to hear the clamor of justice by the international community and abide by the goals and principles of the UN Charter to completely lift the unilateral sanctions against Cuba.

Wang took this stance after US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, announced visa restrictions on 28 Cuban civil servants and members of the Communist Party of Cuba as part the policy of sanctions against the island, together with the tightening of the blockade.

The secretary of State informed that, under the Presidential Proclamation 5377, those officials are banned from entering the US because the allowed or facilitated violent and unjust detentions, false trials and prison sentences for those people who took part in the riots of July 11, 2021.

With these sanctions and financial coercive measures, the US government intends to support more freedom and economic opportunities for the Cuban people, Blinken said and did not mention the blockade as one of the causes of Cuba’s economic situation.
