The European Union (EU) will contribute 2.5 million euros (around 2.6 million dollars), to strengthen the prison system of Ecuador

The resources will be directed to training, specialization of prison staff and obtaining tools for the classification of persons deprived of liberty (PPL).

All of these areas to be addressed are part of a project that will begin in July.

The announcement was made at a conference in the penitentiary field, which was held in Quito, whose objective was to seek agreements and recommendations to face the situation.

According to the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI), overcrowding in prisons in Ecuador would be around 14% and it is hoped that by the end of 2022 some 5,000 people will be deprived of prison by pardons. freedom.

Some of the proposals generated in the event were the implementation of alternative measures to the deprivation of liberty, with the purpose of controlling overcrowding and enabling more spaces that serve as maximum security pavilions.

There are 36 detention centers in the country with an installed capacity of 30,169 spaces, but there are nearly 34,000 inmates.

According to the authorities, since February 23, 2021, there have been six massacres between inmates in various prisons nationwide.
