Civil rights groups in Germany on Monday criticized the plans of the European Commission (EC) regarding Internet surveillance as a privacy violation.
The package of measures, under the pretext of protecting children, puts more than 440 million citizens under generalized suspicion, the citizens’ movement Campact and the organizations Digital Courage, Digitale Freiheit and Digitale Gesellschaft said.
These groups claimed that the regulations suspend the right to privacy instead of stopping the distribution of illegal content.
The statements allude to a bill presented the previous week with which the EC intends to better protect children online.
The European Union (EU) Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, justified the plans with figures demonstrating the need for such action.
Last year, 85 million photos and videos showing sexual abuse of minors were discovered, according to the EU.
Therefore, the bill proposes to force Internet companies to examine the private messages of all their users for images with illegal content.
