President of Russia Vladimir Putin congratulated the head of the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), Leonid Pasechnik, on the national holiday and assured that the defense of its independence and territorial sovereignty will be made possible by joint efforts.
“The citizens of the LPR celebrate their national holiday in difficult conditions, defending their homeland weapons in hand,” said Putin’s message, according to the official Kremlin website.
The head of state assured that the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance signed on February 21st by both parties will serve as a reliable basis to strengthen fraternal ties and bilateral association.
Putin wished Pasechnik good health and success, and asked the people of Lugansk for courage and perseverance in fighting for a peaceful and secure future.
The LPR declared its independence on May 12th, 2014 and since then has been fighting the Kiev government for its autonomy. Russia recognized its sovereignty on February 21st of this year, a decision that other states do not accept.
The Russian president also congratulated on Wednesday the leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, on the national holiday.
