The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes Covid-19, has directly or indirectly killed 15 million people on the planet, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Thursday.
The WHO estimated 14.9 million deaths from the novel coronavirus, and between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021 alone, a total of 5.4 million deaths from the pandemic were reported.
According to the source, most deaths, that is, 84 percent, occurred in Southeast Asia, Europe and America.
The WHO added that lower-middle income and upper-middle income countries make up 81 percent of the total figure, that is, 53 percent of deaths in low-middle income countries and 28 percent in upper-middle income ones.
There have been many deaths in some countries, for example, in India 4.7 million people have lost their lives, which is ten times more than the official figures, the international organization points out.
According to the WHO, there have also been many deaths in countries such as Russia, Indonesia, the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Peru.
The overall death toll was higher in men than in women (57 percent male and 43 percent female) and had a greater impact on senior citizens.
