50 young Palestinians were arrested for protesting against a new Israeli police raid on the Esplanade of the Mosques, located in the occupied area of the city of Jerusalem.
Palestinian media reported that the detainees were transferred to a nearby police station. The official Wafa news agency said that eight other people were arrested in several raids that took place during the night and early hours of Thursday morning in various parts of the West Bank.
After a few days of calm, the tension escalated again due to the raid by uniformed officers on the religious site, sacred to Muslims and Jews.
The latter can only access the site under numerous conditions and are forbidden to pray there, according to agreements that have been in force for decades.
Israeli agents systematically enter the site to expel Palestinian worshippers in order to allow their compatriots to enter.
The new violation of the sanctuary was harshly criticized by the government and the Palestinian parties, a fact they considered a serious provocation and part of the strategy to Judaize the East Jerusalem area.
