The military governments of Burkina Faso and Guinea coincided in requesting the extension of the deadlines for the return to constitutionality set by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).
The deadline in both cases expired last Monday 25, but both military boards agreed in arguing that they need more time for consultations with internal factors on several issues, revealed a spokesman of the regional organization, whose headquarters are located in this city, capital of Nigeria.
The informant announced that Ecowas will dispatch envoys to both countries before the holding of its next summit at a date and venue yet to be determined, during which new sanctions could be added to those previously imposed on the two governments. Although in both cases the language in which the respective positions were expressed was contained, the internal statements of the two military governments were more acrimonious.
At the beginning of the week, the official Burkinabe spokesman, Alkassoum Maiga, made it clear that the government headed by Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba has no intention of modifying the three-year deadline required to call general elections.
For its part, the Guinean government affirmed that it will not act “under restrictions or the dictate of anyone”.
