Uruguay’s FA proposes measures facing inflation and high prices

Concerned about the economic situation in Uruguay, the Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA) on Tuesday proposed a set of proposals to the Government focused on prices in the basic food basket, as well as wages and pensions.

In a public presentation following a meeting of the Political Bureau of the FA, its president, Fernando Pereira, introduced information that reaffirms the worsening of the social inequality in the country.

With respect to prices, the left-wing political force will support the Senate’s minute approved unanimously, which establishes the elimination of the value added tax (VAT) on 19 products to be extended to household supergas, for six months.

The FA proposed a double increase in the monetary transfers for social protection, and adjust monthly the amount for the Allocation to vulnerable families of the Equity Plan established by previous Governments of the political coalition for a year.

Regarding wages and pensions, it proposed an “immediate increase” for public employees as of May 1 and not as an advance for the January 2023 adjustment, which would allow starting the salary recovery process.
