Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his reelection as head of the French government.
“My congratulations to Emmanuel Macron for his sweeping victory at the polls,” Lula wrote on Twitter.
According to the website Brasil 247, the congratulation of the founder of the Workers’ Party is striking, in contrast to the silence from extreme right-wing leader Jair Bolsonaro.
Macron became the first president to be reelected in France since 2002, when Jacques Chirac defeated far-right Jean-Marie Le Pen, Marine’s father.
In last night’s speech to his supporters at the Champs de Mars, the reelected French leader promised to rule for all.
He said that he was aware that many voted for him not to support his ideas but to prevent the arrival of the extreme right to the Elysee Palace.
