UK court formally requests extradition of Julian Assange

This Wednesday, April 20, 2022, Judge Paul Golspring, of the Westminster Magistrates Court, United Kingdom, sent to the British Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, the formal authorization for the extradition to the United States of Julian Assange to be signed.

Fewer options remain for the WikiLeaks founder to avoid moving him to North America. According to the former consul of Ecuador in the United Kingdom, Fidel Narváez, the defense still has several appeals, but he warned that the danger of extradition is imminent.

The British minister will have two months, which can be extended, to decide whether she accepts or rejects the extradition. While Assange’s defense has until May 18 to appeal. Once there is a decision, it can be appealed by the parties, only if the Superior Court authorizes it.

Previously, the Supreme Court denied Julian’s appeal against extradition to the United States, arguing that the request does not raise a moot point of law.

The judicial fight to avoid this outcome began when the former president of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, withdrew, in April 2019, the diplomatic asylum that Assange had, in force since 2012.

At that time, Moreno reiterated that there was no extradition request and that Great Britain had offered guarantees that if the case were to be presented, it would not be handed over to a country where the death penalty could be imposed and carried out or is subject to torture or ill-treatment.
