Christian Viteri denies having managed money for the campaign. His testimony was made on the tenth day of the Bribes case hearing.
The Court of Judgment in the Bribes 2012-2016 case, composed of judges Iván León, Iván Saquicela and Marco Rodríguez, continue with the second day on this tenth day of hearing against the 21 prosecuted for the alleged bribery offense.
During the afternoon, the defense of former President Rafael Correa and former Vice President Jorge Glas is scheduled to present their release tests.
Harrison Salcedo, Glas’s lawyer, said that on Wednesday, February 26, the defendant’s preventive detention expired, who is serving a six-year sentence for the crime of unlawful association in the Odebrecht Case and is also involved in the Bribes Case in which the Prosecutor investigates the alleged contributions of companies to the electoral campaign of Alianza PAIS.
Salcedo announced to Pichincha Universal that he has already submitted an order for habeas corpus to review the precautionary measure against his client.
Regarding the Bribes case, he said that he has been badly taken from the beginning and that it is the State Attorney General’s office and his entourage who attack all the defendants.
On the prosecutor’s expert, Alexandra Mantilla, the lawyer said that the official must have her credentials as part of her professionalism and added that it is clear that she did not do her job alone.
On the other hand, Glas is expected to render his version via telematics from the Latacunga prison.
Meanwhile, until noon, nine of the 21 defendants presented their evidence. The last to present his documentation was the former Guayas ex-assembly and ex-coordinator of Viviana Bonilla’s campaign, Christian Viteri.
The former official denied having participated in the alleged corruption network that asked for money from businessmen for political activities of the previous government in exchange for securing contracts with the State.
Viteri requested the appearance of Marcia Montalvo, as a witness, to indicate on the management of the PAIS Alliance campaign in 2014 and said that accounts were opened at the National Development Bank, but he did not know about the contributions and the origin of the funds.
The only thing he claimed to know is that all transactions were in cash and that the Bank must have a verification record.
He pointed out that USD 265 thousand were used for the Viviana Bonilla campaign and revealed to the judges that the money that was handled was withdrawn from the Guayas Law School.
In addition, he pointed out that the organization of the campaign was carried out in the so-called “War Room”.
He also questioned that María Augusta Enriquez, who was dismissed by Judge Daniellla Camacho, did not participate in this process, at the time, when the former official would have managed resources since 2011.
In the same vein, the former legislator said that Rolando Carrera, campaign treasurer must be summoned; Paulina Proaño, economic manager; and Byron Andrade, husband of the also prosecuted Laura Terán, for having managed resources in 2011.
He said that with the only people who maintained contact while coordinator, he was with Pamela Martínez, Laura Terán and María Augusta Enriquez. Within the scheme presented by the Prosecutor’s Office, the first two appear as coordinators of the alleged corruption plot.
He also indicated that he did not make trips to Quito to withdraw money from the Concorde building, as he is accused and reiterated that all the economic resources requested for the Bonilla campaign were sent from Quito to the Guayas Bar Association, from where he was withdrawing them for depositors in accounts of the then National Development Bank.
At the end of his speech, Viteri did not accept questions from the Prosecutor or the Attorney General’s Office. He said he had been very explicit and accepted the right of silence.
Meanwhile, Pablo Muñoz, lawyer for Laura Terán, reacted to the testimony of Christian Viteri and denied the above.
Muñoz explained that his defendant has introduced more than 12 thousand documents in which he contrasts each of his words included in his anticipated testimony. In this context, he defended the prosecution thesis of an alleged corruption plot.
The presentation of evidence of the defense of Édgar Salas (Consermin company), Viviana Bonilla and Alexis Mera is also expected for this afternoon.
