Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ratified Moscow’s support for the Palestinian cause in a telephone conversation with his counterpart Mahmoud Abbas.
During the dialogue, Putin reiterated his country’s firm position in support of the rights of the Palestinian people, the official Wafa news agency reported.
He also emphasized his condemnation of Israeli actions to prevent worshippers from going to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, and called for respecting the historical status quo existing in that sacred site, following the recent attack by Tel Aviv troops.
The president assured that his country will satisfy, as far as possible, the food needs of the Palestinians and other importers in the Middle East, especially wheat, Wafa pointed out.
He also explained that every effort will be made to negotiate an agreement to put an end to the Ukraine crisis.
For his part, Abbas briefed his Russian counterpart about the latest developments in East Jerusalem following the recent Israeli incursions into the Esplanade of Mosques, where Al Aqsa, the third holiest site for Muslims, is located.
The president stressed the need to respect international law and to work to end Israel’s occupation in order to create the Palestinian State, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
