Yesterday, six prisoners were found hanged in different cells
At dawn on Thursday, February 20, 2020 there were riots in the prison center of Turi, in Cuenca. Several groups of special operations of the National Police came to the place to control the situation. Yesterday, 6 people were hanged and with it add up to 13 violent deaths so far this year in the country’s prisons.
According to preliminary information, the mutiny would have been given by the transfer of some inmates, who resisted being changed from penitentiary.
The bodies of the six prisoners were found hanged in different cells and the bodies showed no signs of violence or torture. Investigators do not rule out that it is a case of revenge or suicide. The Police and the Treasury investigates the event.
So far this year, 13 violent deaths are recorded within the country’s prison system, compared to 32 that were recorded throughout 2019.
In a statement, the National Service for Comprehensive Care of Persons Deprived of Liberty indicated that the prison administration is maintaining «permanent dialogues with the leaders of the different pavilions in order to know the causes that motivated these events».
