IACHR demands to investigate new massacre in Ecuador prison

The IACHR urged the Ecuadorian State to investigate ex officio the murders in the Turi prison and implement actions to prevent a repetition of the events.

The latest murders in the Ecuadorian social rehabilitation system, which ended with the lives of 20 people deprived of liberty in the Turi prison, caused a new pronouncement by international organizations.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) spoke about the latest events that occurred in the Azuay N1 Deprivation of Liberty Center in Turi and condemned the violent acts, this Tuesday, April 5.

The international entity reminded the Ecuadorian State that it is its duty to guarantee the life and safety of persons deprived of liberty, who are part of the social rehabilitation system.

Thus, the IACHR urged the State to investigate ex officio and quickly, seriously, and impartially these acts and implement actions to prevent the repetition of acts of violence in prisons. Meanwhile, on these events, the Prosecutor’s Office initiated a preliminary investigation.
