Egypt condemns Israeli escalation in occupied Palestinian territories

Egypt on Monday condemned the new Israeli escalation in the occupied territories, including an attack by settlers on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site for Muslims.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez asked in a communiqué for an immediate end to Israel’s actions, especially during the Jewish, Muslim and Christian holidays that are taking place this month.

Hafez called to avoid “falling into cycles of violence that prevent the desired stability and perpetuate the climate of tension that will only lead to further mutual escalation.”

He also urged Tel Aviv to abide by the rules of law and protect the lives of Palestinian civilians.

On Thursday, far-right Israeli lawmaker Itamar Ben Gvir, along with several settlers, entered the courtyard of the Al-Aqsa Mosque escorted by the police, an action that was considered a new provocation.

Ben Gvir is known for his actions against the Palestinians, which are even criticized in his country.

He recently set up his office in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, thus causing a new wave of clashes.
