The full cabinet of Sri Lanka, except for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, resigned with immediate effect, while the country is going through its worst economic crisis, with long power cuts and basic products’ shortages.
Education Minister and House leader Dinesh Gunawardena told reporters that all members of the government submitted their resignations to Rajapaksa on late Sunday, the Newswire portal reported.
This paves the way for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, brother of Mahinda Rajapaksa, to form a new ministerial team, amid demands from coalition partners to create an interim government.
Experts said that the ministers were under intense pressure from domestic public opinion over the executive’s alleged mismanagement of the economic crisis caused by a shortage of foreign exchange reserves.
Widespread protests took place throughout the night, despite the imposition of a 36-hour-long curfew, which ended on Monday morning.
The demonstrators demand the president’s resignation, and authorities declared a state of emergency after an angry crowd surrounded the presidential residence on March 31.
