The Federation of University Students of Ecuador (FEUE) pointed out that the Government of President Guillermo Lasso is strengthening its policy of repressing the social struggle. This due to the appointment of Patricio Carrillo as Minister of the Interior.
Through a statement, the FEUE indicated that the Government is not “interested” in investigating the excesses of use of force, in the indigenous and popular uprising of October 2019.
“The government of Guillermo Lasso, by having filed a lawsuit for the unconstitutionality of the amnesties, shows that it is not interested in dialogue with the social and popular sectors and that it will continue to repress the mobilizations, and that Carrillo will be the main promoter of the repression of the people to impose the government economic measures.
The statement added that the new Minister of the Interior must “response for his actions while he was in charge of the National Police” in the demonstrations of October 2019.
“He ordered the brutal repression of the people, the violation of human rights, the excessive use of public force, the raiding of university campuses and a generalized attack on the civilian population that caused deaths, injured people, unjustly imprisoned and suffered physical and psychological damage.”
Given these facts, the FEUE publicly rejected Carrillo’s appointment. In addition, the organization called on the national and international justice bodies to investigate and punish the crimes against humanity committed in the October 2019 protests by the public force.
