Supreme Electoral Tribunal disables Evo Morales’s candidacy for senator in Bolivia

At the beginning of February, MAS-IPSP registered the ex-president as a candidate for first senator by the department of Cochabamba for the next general elections in Bolivia.

The decision was taken on Thursday, February 20, 2020 by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Bolivia. The candidacy of former President Evo Morales to the Senate was disqualified under the speech that he did not meet the requirement of permanent residence.

Salvador Romero, president of the court, said that due to the lack of said condition, the “disqualification” of Morales and other applicants was “ordered.

Recall that this Wednesday, February 19, Romero denied that the candidates Evo Morales and Diego Pary would have been disabled and assured that the analysis continued for the 13 contested cases.
After the news that his candidacy for senator for the May elections in Bolivia was rejected by the electoral body of the country, Morales spoke through his Twitter account stating that “it is a blow against democracy.”

On the other hand, the president of the Bolivian TSE clarified that “the disqualification lawsuits filed against Luis Arce, candidate for the presidency of the MAS” were dismissed for “lack of foundation” and that he “complied with the qualification requirements”.

According to the pollster Ciesmori, the candidate of the Movement To Socialism (MAS), Luis Arce, leads the intention to vote with 31.6%, far exceeding the former centrist president Carlos Mesa, who would count with 17.1% and the coupist Jeanine Áñez that obtained 16.5%.
