The president of Mauritania, Mohamed Uld Cheij Ghazuani, entrusted the resigning Prime Minister Mohamed Uld Bilal with the formation of a government, a step interpreted here as a sign of confidence of the former in the latter.
The entrustment came last night after Uld Bilal resigned on Tuesday following criticism of the president’s management of the executive.
In a decree, the Presidency reappointed the politician as Prime Minister with the authority to form a new government.
After a meeting with the head of State at the Presidential Palace, Uld Bilal said that the new executive will be close to the citizen and will work to realize the requests of its host.
The Mauritanian president last week criticized the government’s performance by describing as unacceptable the lack of personnel in most ministries to solve citizens’ problems.
Added to this is the disappearance of a group of Mauritanian citizens in Mali, which deteriorated bilateral relations in the face of accusations against the Malian Army for its alleged responsibility.
Ould Bilal has served as prime minister since August 2020, when his predecessor resigned in a surprise move following allegations of corruption.
Mauritania, in northwest Africa and with a population of just over four million inhabitants, is going through a complex economic situation, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
