European Union and China agree on need to restore peace

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Policy and International Security, Josep Borrell, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed on the need to restore peace in Ukraine on Tuesday.

In a telephone conversation, both officials valued the conflict in Ukraine as a key issue for European institutions.

Therefore, this will be one of the issues discussed on Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to a statement from European diplomacy.

The exchange between Borrell and Wang put on the table “the urgency of returning to peace on the European continent as soon as possible,” the official document pointed out.

They discussed the ongoing negotiations to establish humanitarian corridors and prevent any risk to civilians, the information explains.

Borrell stressed that the crisis in Ukraine is having a major impact on the global economy at a time when the main concern should be the recovery from the pandemic, he told the Chinese minister.

This is the third exchange between Borrell and Wang since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 the launching of a “special military operation” to demilitarize and desnazify Ukraine.
