At least 14 killed in attack in Democratic Republic of Congo

At least 14 people, including seven children, were killed in an attack by the Codeco group in the Drakpa refugee camp, in the northeastern Congolese region of Ituri, the capital television reported.

Sources from the International Red Cross and the aforementioned camp indicated that the attackers used machetes against the people gathered in the facility, where the majority of displaced people who fled the violence in the village of Ngotshi are concentrated.

The authorship of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (Codeco), an armed formation that announces itself as a defender of the interests of the Lendu people, is mentioned, the capital’s press highlights.

Codeco was founded in 2018 with the announced purpose of combating alleged abuses by the Army, but in recent times its victims are civilians, as on last January 17th, when members of the group killed another 14 people.

The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sama Lukonde, recently stated that he will promote a bill before the Parliament to combat money laundering, corruption and the financing of terrorism.
