UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres on Friday called for a political solution to solve the civil war in Syria that started 11 years ago and has devastated the country and its people.
Guterres said the past 11 years of brutal conflict have exacted an unconscionable human cost, so he called on all parties to meaningfully engage in the UN-facilitated political process.
“we must not lose hope,” move beyond “rhetorical commitments” to peace and to do all that is necessary to reach a negotiated political solution in line with Security Council resolution 2254 (2015), he stressed.
The UN chief called for ensuring greater humanitarian access to address the needs of people throughout the country.
Over 10 years ago, the civil war broke out in Syria, largely as a result of the West´s interest in imposing a regime change and overthrowing President Bashar Al Assad.
At Damascus´ request, Russian military forces support to fight off terrorism in Syria, while the country also faces the illegal occupation of the United States and Turkey.
