Covid-19: Global death toll from coronavirus reaches six million

The tragic deaths of six million people due to Covid-19 is a painful reminder that we must avoid lowering our guard against the pandemic, UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres said Monday.

On Twitter, the UNSG said that, in memory of these people, “we must move faster to ensure that everyone, everywhere, can have access to vaccines and treatments.”

According to the Johns Hopkins University, the global Covid-19 death toll reached six million on Monday.

The United States reports the highest official death toll worldwide, reaching nearly one million deaths due to the disease.

Likewise, remote Pacific islands, whose isolation protected them for more than two years, are now facing their first outbreaks and deaths, amid the spread of the Omicron new variant.

Present Covid-19 death toll worldwide exceeds populations in Berlin and Brussels, but it´s estimated that the real number is much higher, since large number of cases are not counted due to deficiencies in records and tests.
