Vietnam passed four million Covid-19 cases

(Prensa Latina) Vietnam surpassed the four million cases of Covid-19 and became the twenty-first country in the world, the fifth in Asia and the second in Southeast Asia with more cases.

The country once again reached a maximum of 125,587 cases, with a total since the beginning of the pandemic of 4,59,262.

Until the end of April last year, Vietnam was one of the nations that was coping best with the disease worldwide (3,428 cases, 35 deaths), but first the irruption of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, and two months ago the Omicron variant, pushed the statistics up to the current level.

The epidemiological situation is also worrying in Hanoi, which has been reporting peaks almost every day since the beginning of the year. This Friday the figure, again unprecedented, was 21,395, more than one-fifth of the national total.

The Ministry of Health also reported 97 deaths, being the death toll of 40,644. More than 4,200 patients are clinically compromised.

Vietnam is focusing on achieving herd immunity through vaccination. To date, just over 79 million of its 98 million inhabitants have completed the two-dose immunization schedule and 41% have completed a third booster.

Health authorities are considering Covid-19 an endemic disease, as despite the high number of cases, the number of hospitalizations and deaths is quite low.
